Philosophy of Education

  • I believe my role as a teacher includes caring first and foremost for the well-being of the student, because education means little if it is producing textbooks and not people.
  • I believe a successful classroom should engage students in asking the "why" questions, developing critical thinking skills, and creating.
  • I believe students should feel free to share their ideas and interpretations in my English classroom because it encourages independent thought, which develops the students as individuals.
  • I believe discussions and debates in the classroom should be well founded in logical support, because we should be concerned about why we believe what we do.
  • I believe an innovative classroom dynamic is important to create active learners because one method may not always engage all students.
  • I believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher to connect curriculum to relevant topics, because it boosts learning and retention while expanding the knowledge beyond the classroom.
  • I believe that high standards are essential to stretching the abilities of students, because it gives them a goal and helps them discover what they are capable of.
  • I believe curriculum should reflect a blend of staple literary classics and contemporary works because students should have the opportunity to find relevance throughout all ages of literature.
  • I believe students should have many opportunities for writing both formal and personal essays because in this way they can enhance their literacy and be encouraged to analyze and form their own thoughts.
  • I believe my role as a teacher includes a responsibility to be aware of school policies because my awareness and knowledge helps me deal more effectively with issues and situations in a manner consistent with both my conscience and school guidelines.
  • I believe I have the responsibility to teach ┬ástudents of all socioeconomic backgrounds because all students deserve the opportunity to learn.
  • I believe that my English classroom should integrate technology into the learning environment because it can enhance learning by providing unique advantages and is an important part of a 21st century classroom.
