ESL Unit

I taught a unit at Lincoln High School in a Level 1 reading class on the book “Riding with Rosa Parks,” a Reading A-Z book at level J.

Otherwise, here are the highlights:

  • I planned it using the Understanding by Design strategy.
  • I created an alphabet chant with words specific to this story to break up the monotony of “A, apple” and for more practice with vocab. Alphabet Chant
  • Students had a great discussion of racism and equality. They stood in a certain place to indicate whether they agreed or disagreed with statements and defended their reasoning from there.
  • To ensure understanding, students acted out the story in the book in small groups.
  • I taught Cause and Effect first with a funny Roadrunner video and then had students identify Cause and Effect in their book. They further practiced by writing sentences about pictures, which they were highly engaged in as the pictures related to their lives. My co-op kept the pictures to use in the future.

  • Students used technology to help them define and translate vocabulary.
  • Students wrote about a rule they would change today, and several Hispanic students wrote about changing immigration laws. Student Tests
  • I did a Pre- and Post-Assessment and gathered and analyzed the data from these assessments. We used this data to inform placement for the next quarter. Chart and comments
