Devotion 3- A Happy Heart
“A happy heart makes the face look cheerful” – Proverbs 15:13
One of my students once asked me a question that has stuck with me ever since. He asked: “Miss Nikodym is it okay for us to laugh at God when He is being funny?” I had to stop and process that question for a while before I was able to give him an answer. Is God funny? Well… he made a donkey talk to its owner once… that is pretty funny. And if you read the story of Jonah as an adult his “drama queen” reactions to everything God asks him to do are quite funny. And how could a God who created narwhals, monkeys, and blobfish not be considered at least a little bit funny? So after more reflection on this question… I have decided that yes, It is okay for us to laugh at God when He is being funny. If it wasn’t okay for us to laugh at God why would He have created a world filled with moments of joy and laughter? If it wasn’t okay for us to think of God as funny I would not have been able to find that verse in Proverbs about a happy heart and a cheery face. But thinking about this made me think of God and His humor. In the world, we often try to make humor that is at the expense of another person. I don’t think that is how God intended our humor to be. I think God intended humor to be about pure joy. We can laugh because God gave us JOY! Joy that we can see good things people do for others. Joy that we can laugh at a little child saying something fun while they are still learning. Joy that we have a God that loves us so much that he will give us a Savior. Joy that we will live eteranlly in heaven someday because of that Savior. A heaven where joy and laughter will never cease… and ask God ourselves if its okay to laugh!
