Devotion 8- The Good Guys vs. The Bad Guys
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defined.- 1 Samuel 17:45
“You can’t get me, you’re the bad guy, and the bad guys always miss!” This is a sentence I overheard while the kiddos were playing Cops and Robbers at recess one day. It made me glad that I am not the only one that gets baffled by action movies or TV shows. The bad guys can shoot a hundred times and not hit anything, but then the good guy takes one shot and knocks out all of them! I think the story of David and Goliath is kind of like that. The good guy in our story is David and all it takes is one little stone to knock the bad guy clean out! One little stone… but also something much bigger. The thing that is much bigger is our great God! I want to feel like I am always David in this story! Great big trust in God and one little stone…but more often than not I relate more to the bad guys in those action movies. I try again, and again, and again to follow God’s commandments perfectly. As hard as I try I fail again, and again, and again. I am a poor and miserable sinner doomed to miss every time. But the good news is that I have a hero and my side, and so do you! This hero that can take out sin, death, and the power of the devil in one fell swoop. Not just a hero that could, a hero that did! So even when we are the bad guys that miss every single time, we can remember that Good Friday and Easter Sunday and remember that we have new life with the ultimate Good Guy that never ever misses!
