What is Kinetic Theory? (https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-kinetic-theory.htm): This article covers the scientific theory regarding the nature of gases. Kinetic theory explains the observable and measurable (macroscopic) properties of gases in terms of their molecular composition and activity. Kinetic theory makes a number of assumptions, like a gas is made of very small particles, each with non-zero mass, constantly moving in a random matter. 

Gas Laws (https://chem.fsu.edu/chemlab/chm1045/gas_laws.html): This article covers gas laws, such as Charles’, Boyle’s, Avogadro’s and Gay Lussac’s Laws. Charles’ Law- gives the relationship between volume and temperature if pressure and amount of gas are held constant. Boyle’s Law- states that the volume of a given amount of gas held at constant temperature varies inversely with the applied pressure when the temperature and mass are constant. Avogadro’s Law- Gives the relationship between volume and amount of gas in moles when pressure and temperature are held constant. Gay Lussac’s Law– states that the pressure of a given amount of gas held at constant volume is directly proportional to the Kelvin temperature.

For this reason, bridges are built with metal expansion joints, so that they can expand and contract without causing faults in the overall structure of the bridge. Other machines and structures likewise have built-in protection against the hazards of thermal expansion. But thermal expansion can also be advantageous, making possible the workings of thermometers and thermostats.
