Reflection of my field experience:
For my field experience I shadowed Concordia University golf coaches. I was fortunate enough to spend time with two great gentlemen who know how to recruit well talented athletes who want to strive for the best in their program. They were able to show me what they do to recruit, fill their roster, and mainly how they coach to have the program be successful.
Field Experience Interview Questions:
1.) What is the toughest part about your job?
Shawn- Each player is different in their own way. They all have different swings, and each player wants different amount of help on the golf course.
Brett- Filling a roster. The high end players are easier to get because the scholarship money they get is more. Trying to fill the lower end of the roster is more difficult just because there isn’t as much money to give.
2.) What is the most rewarding part about your job?
Shawn- Just seeing kids grow up and accomplish great things.
Brett- Seeing our student athletes improve in the classroom and on the golf course. Seeing them develop as a person is rewarding in many ways.
3.) What were some key things in college you did to get you to where you are today?
Shawn- Building connections with the Athletic Directors
Brett- In college he had a unique experience by helping with the women’s basketball team and learning all about coaching.
4.) What are some opportunities after college you have taken to get you to where you are today?
Brett- After college he continued to coach as an assistant coach and he helped kids out in youth clinics.
5.) Why did you choose to be a college golf coach?
Shawn- Partly to get his masters. But the main reason is he likes to have an impact on peoples life and he feels by helping as a coach he accomplishes that.
Brett- Coaching has always been a passion for him and when working at the pro shop in Milford the golf coaching position opened up and he jumped on it because he felt his passion for golf and coaching would mix perfectly. He has been here for six years now and has accomplished many goals with the program.
