Intramural Sports Eligibility

The Sun Devil Intramural Sports offers the ASU community a wide variety of sports. Along with each of these sports there are different competition levels because not everyone has the same competitive desire. The leagues and tournaments occur throughout the school year with both indoor and outdoor activities. The people who are eligible to play at ASU are current students, secondary students, and non-ASU students paying full time or part-time Sun Devil Fitness Complex fees. ASU alumni and affiliates who have purchased a Sun Devil Fitness Complex membership play in these intramurals. All SDFC members must have purchased an intramural membership to participate. A player can only participate on one team. Players are forbidden to play on both an Elite and Recreational team. Teams cannot play ineligible players. A player must appear on the official team roster. The intramurals are open to the collegiate athletes as long as they are a SDFC member.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for participation. If any student discontinues all ties with the University then they are ineligible for intramural sport competition at that time. A student, undergraduate or graduate, may participate if they have one or more credit hours of class work and has paid the University Programs and Facilities Fee (student fees). A student receiving financial aid based on athletic ability shall be ineligible in the sport and related activities while the grant is in force. Also for collegiate athletes if they are lettering from a four year collegiate institution they will not be eligible to participate in the sport or related activities until one academic year has passed.

University of North Carolina

Intramural sports offer the opportunity for participants to compete against their peers in a friendly and structured environment, through a variety of team sports and individual/dual activities that fit their needs. The University students receive an automatic recreation membership through enrollment and payment of mandatory student fees. For employees, families, and part-time students, in order to use Campus Recreation facilities and be eligible to participate they must pay a fee. Regardless of reason, no ineligible player may compete and participate. No student, faculty, or staff member may play on more than one team per sport.

My opinion:

I think that students that are enrolled into the school should be the only ones able to play intramurals. Once these students are enrolled with the school they should get an all access pass to everything on campus and shouldn’t have to pay a fee to play intramurals and being involved in things on campus. The students are already paying so much money to go to school and spending so much time getting educated that they should be able to go have friendly competitions with their peers and enjoy their time while at the school. I like how most schools have two different leagues because there are people who just want to enjoy their time and not be super competitive and then you get the students who are all in and super competitive, so I think it is right to have two different leagues. In the end it is all about enjoying the time on campus and enjoying what the school has to provide.
