Unit 1: The Nature of Science

Below are the four links that relate to Unit 1 of our class (The Nature of Science):

  • What’s the difference between a scientific law and theory?
    • This video discusses how a scientific law and theory are different from one another. In essence, a scientific law predicts the results of certain initial conditions, whereas a scientific theory tries to provide the most logical explanation as to why things happen as they do. In simplest terms, a law predicts what happens while a theory proposes why. This is very useful information for this unit.

  • 10 Reasons Why Christians Should Care About Science:
    • This is a well-written article that illustrates why a Christian should care about issues emerging from the science-and-theology interface. There are 10 different areas represented and they include: knowing God, biblical interpretation, the human person, creation care, cultural engagement, Christian scientists, what we can know, conflict and reconciliation, the big questions, and creator and co-creators. I hope you enjoy!
  • History of the Scientific Method:
    • The history of the scientific method is a fascinating and long one, covering thousands of years of history. The development of the scientific method involves some of the most enlightened cultures in history, as well as some great scientists, philosophers and theologians. This article is very interesting and relevant to this unit.
  • What does it mean that humanity is made in the image of God?
    • In class, we were asked the question, “Why are there so many patterns in the world?”. One of the answers is that our world (and us) are made in the image of God, or imago dei. This article, along with the included video, explain that a likeness exists between us and God in the following areas: mentally, morally, and socially. I hope that you find this interesting!
