Devotion- Sing A New Song

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name tell of his salvation from day to day. – Psalm 96:1-2

Kindergarten if full to the brim of singing. We sing our meal prayers, we sing to remember our procedures. We sing to practice phonics and grammar skills. One of my favorite things is that we have a song to help us remember how to write every number from 1-10. (Yes I will sing them for you if you ask! haha.) I remember when the students were first learning these number songs very vividly because of the pure excitement and joy when the walked into the room at the beginning of the day and saw the new number so that they knew a new song was coming. They would wait all day in anticipation of the new song, they would try and figure out what it might sound like on their own. They came up with some pretty creative songs, but never one that was quite as right as the one that we learned during our math time. We sing a lot of new songs in our life. We turn over new leaves, we move, we start a new job, get into a new relationship. Through out all of these things we have a lot of anticipation waiting to see what the song will be like. We often try to come up with the words and actions all on our own. But those songs are never quite right. The Psalmist in Psalm 96 tells us about the perfect new song that we are so blessed to sing. This song is a song of Salvation. The story stays the same day after day…. our Savior died on the cross, took away our sins, and rose again to new life for us! Jesus created the perfect new song for us to sing and get excited about not just on special days… but every day!!!
