Devotion 7- If I Must Boast

“If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 11:30

As you can probably imagine, boasting is a big problem in a Kindergarten classroom. In fact, kids boast about the most ridiculous things. They will boast that they saw four snakes when their friend only said one. They will boast about how loud their fart was. They will boast about how sick they were. Kids will boast a lot in order to get a response out of their peers. Sometimes they are not even looking for a good response…just any response will do. It is not only kids that like to boast though. I find myself in the same boat at times… in fact, sometimes we as adults even like to boast about “how Christian” we are. We boast that we had perfect attendance at church. We boast that we wrote the devo that had the most views. We boast that we spent 40 minutes reading our bible yesterday while our friend only read his bible for 20 minutes. We want to get that response of “WOW that person must really love Jesus a lot,” from our peers. While none of these things that we are boasting about are bad things (I encourage you keep reading the bible, going to church, and sharing your thoughts, but)…. the boasting will still take the focus off of what really matters and turn the focus to us and what we can do instead. What really matters is Christ. What really matters is that Christ showed weakness by dying on the cross. I think that sometimes our very lowest point; that is the point when Christ speaks to us the very most. We must all suffer at times and bear our own crosses. When we are bearing those crosses just as Christ did, that is when we see our Savior so very clearly. I believe that is why Paul says that he has to boast, he wants it to be about his weakness. Because even in our weakness; Christ’s grace, forgiveness, and new life can shine. Because of this we can say with Paul: “For the sake of Christ, the, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships persecutions, and calamities, For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
