Philosophy of Education

As a teacher, there are a few personal philosophies that I believe is my job to change or make happen. I believe that I should make school a place not only for learning what you need to know but also what the students want to learn about. By doing this, I believe students will want to go to school, especially if I make the classroom fun. I want this to happen because I want my students to enjoy school, so hopefully, they will want to continue their education rather than feeling like they have to. I believe that the students should have some sort of relationship with me so they are not afraid to ask for help or tell me that they do not understand the way I explained it.  I want them to succeed rather than not talk to me and fail. I would also like the parents to have a part in their children’s stories education because parents are role models who should encourage education. I want to help them do that with communication from me, whether that is through parent-teacher conferences, home visits, or whatever they have time for. In addition,  my role as a teacher is to be a guide rather than someone who tells the student exactly what to do all the time. If the student only does what they are told, then they would not learn good decision-making skills. I believe the classroom should be student-centered because I want them to enjoy their education. If they do not, they will not be as successful as they could be. I believe in a Christ-based curriculum where the teacher is able to relate everything back to God because God is the center of everything and the kids should know that.

Through this class, I have developed certain personal philosophies that will benefit me when I get into a classroom. They are making the classroom fun, developing a personal relationship with the students, getting the parents involved, guide the students so they develop good decisions-making skills, and having a Christ-based curriculum.  I have learned that these philosophies are important to teachers and how to make that happen through this class, Introduction to Education, and cannot wait to learn more during my next three years of college. One of the things that I made in this class that I am proud of is my Daily Lesson Plan. Lesson plans are a big part of teaching. If you are not prepared for class then you will not be able to teacher your students successfully. That is why in class, we took weeks of class time to learn how to make the best lesson plan we can. One of the methods we learned was called Understanding by Design, which is a lesson plan strategy that uses backward design for success.

Over the next couple of years, I hope to receive a basic understanding of what it is children should know when they come into my classroom and what they should know when they leave. I would like to know this for each grade in Elementary school because I’m not sure what grade I will be teaching in the future. Having this basic understanding will give me a goal to strive to achieve. I understand that each school might have different standards, but if I could learn the general/basic stuff they should know, that would make me feel more comfortable.
