There are many different types of diversity that exist in the classroom. Some of these diversities you can see and some you have to work to identify. However, each of these is has an impact in the classroom. My goal is to create a safe space for each for every student in my classroom and embrace what makes them unique.
Neuro-Diverse Learners
I have had the opportunity to spend the weekend at Camp Luther in Schuyler, Nebraska. The camp that I went to that weekend was called “His Kids.” I and two other Concordia students were assigned to a 37-year-old that is diagnosed with Down syndrome. The camp had many activities that included: scavenger hunts, kickball, outside play, coloring, card games, s’mores, campfires, and pumpkin carving.
The biggest lesson that I learned was that we cannot put our own standards on these individuals. They can and deserve to be treated as other students. The mindset that I had before the weekend did not include how funny, and loving these individuals can be. We bonded over how sassy we could both be towards each other, and at the same time sit outside holding the camp cats. This experience taught me all students have the right to break any standard we put on them and showed how capable they are at achieving.
Cultural Diversity
There are many different cultures that can make up a classroom Within these cultures, there are many cultural acceptable norms. These can vary greatly depending on the culture that you were raised in. Having the opportunity to work in China for five weeks at an English camp forced me to learn about new cultures through emersion. It has inspired me to acknowledge different cultures and create an environment for ALL students to find success.
Readiness Diversity
Another type of diversity that is important for teachers is our students’ currently learning profile. Because our students are each different learning these can be crucial for helping a teacher differentiate learning based on student need. As this graphic shows when we look at our students there are a lot of characteristics to consider what makes them diverse. When we as teachers combine all of these together it can help us give our students the tools for success.
